So you’ve decided it’s time to learn how to ride a motorcycle, you’ve found motorcycleskills.ie, the best place to learn how to ride a motorcycle. Now what? Well here’s a few steps on what you need to do to get yourself started.
Where to begin How do I begin? First thing to make sure of is that you have the correct gear. That includes: Helmet, boots, gloves, riding jacket and riding pants. They must be in good condition and must fit comfortably. Ensure all your PPE equipment meets EU standards.
Where a student has his/her own machine, the student must insure that the machine is: 1. Road worthy, 2. Insured 3. Taxed
Finally, you should have all documentation available for inspection including Driving license / learners permit.
Other information Group Riding. Group riding is a standard procedure while out with a group of Motorcyclists. Whether you are on holidays or just out for a day trip the procedure is the same with the main aim “Safety”.
You have your Lead biker and a Sweeper, the lead biker is the person who issues all instructions, route sheets, safety signals, meeting points during the ride for breaks and regrouping, contact phone numbers in case your lost or breakdown and various other information.
The Sweeper is always the last person in the group and is familiar with the route and can be in contact with the Leader using CB/Two way radio communication as can be others in the group.
There are many variations of group riding and there are no hard set rules. Staggered and Single line riding with the 2 second rule gap between machines and the one which I believe is important is the drop off system where when the leader makes a turn on route the rider behind him waits at the junction until all Riders have passed, on seeing the Sweeper the rider takes up the second last position and continues his ride and so no one rider is left behind.
